How to use the HAY cards for goal setting

During goal setting, it will be supportive and empowering if we can be mindful to reflect on our values and motivations. Or if we can be wild and willing to integrate the polarities and opposing ideas. Before being free and giving ourselves permission to express authentically.

Look at the 6 Need Awareness Cards and notice your current actions or desired actions.

  • Step 1: Identify the card(s) that best describe(s) what are you doing or desire to be doing.

  • Step 2: Is your need met or unmet?

  • If the card describes what you desire to be doing, how will you relate to this need which has not been met?

  • If the card describes what you are doing (and your are showing actions which are mostly on the left side of the 2 columns), how will you relate to this need which has been met?

  • If the card describes what you are doing (and you are showing actions which are mostly on the right side of the 2 columns), is there other way(s) you wish it can be met?

Look at the 11 Emotion Awareness Cards and notice your body or state.

  • Step 3: Identify the card(s) that best describe(s) how you may be feeling if your need(s) can be met.

  • Step 4: Explore your emotions more clearly.

  • Step 5: Look at the back of the identified Feeling Card(s), answer 1-2 questions to explore what can you do to have more of this feeling?

Look at the 17 Thought Awareness Cards and notice your thinking pattern.

  • Step 6: Identify the card(s) that best describe(s) the thought(s) which might stop you from fulfilling your needs.

  • Step 7: Look at the respective Thinking Cards(s) of the identified thought(s) and answer 2-3 questions to expand your perspective. (Try your best to make a guess even if the question is difficult. There is no right answer. Just be honest with yourself.)

Look that the Life Situations Card.

  • Step 8: After sharing/realised all these, what goal(s) do you have or will you set?

  • IF you are stuck, look at the respective Action Card(s) of the identified need(s) and answer 2-3 questions to explore possible actions that may relate to possible goal(s) that help fulfil your needs.

  • Look at the respective Graph Card(s) of the identified feeling(s). Is your body active or passive? Is how you may be feeling based on internal or external references?

  • Look at the respective Feeling Cards of the identified feeling(s). Can you relate to any of the description better?
